interesting.  are you also running linux entirely from the eMMC and
not using a card?

"playing with the mixer settings will damage the device permanently
and even possibly start a fire. A noticeable amount of smoke and odor
was released from my Dell Venue 8 Pro but it is still working fine.
The HP Stream 7 device was not so lucky and it's audio hardware was
totally destroyed. The current Stream 7 I am testing with has minor
damage now too"
