Patched kernel; recompiled it
then recompiled the tinc and all worked

First, recompile. The error will then change from "File descriptor in
bad state" to "Invalid argument". Then use this hack:

tincd -n vpn%d -c /etc/tinc/vpn1 [other options...]

You might also need to change the tinc-up/tinc-down scripts since the
name of the network interface will change to vpnX, where X is a number,
probably 0.

Alternatively, apply the attached patch to the 2.4.14 kernel.
