it seems the SDIO problem has been recognised as a regression in kernel 4.5 http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.mmc/36053 shame, because it did seem promising. I was thinking of building k4,5 anyway and using an external USB WiFi adaptor (I have a Ralink one which I use with my Raspberry Pi-2) just to get an idea.
