Without wanting to start a flamewar (I use git but I'm not a big fan
of it either), you should definitely give a try to 3rd generation VCS
softwares.

Be it git, hg (mercurial), bzr (bazaar), svk (said to be svn evolution)
or some other one, once you are used to work totally off-line, branch
as will without asking for permission, and allow people to merge your
code as easily, IMHO it can change a developer life.

And more specifically about git, hosting repository has become easy
now thanks to gitosis.
